Cinema, Animation and Serenity in Japan: Reflections by Hassan Muthalib

Fresh from his cinematic tour of Japan, award-winning Malaysian filmmaker and historian Hassan Muthalib will deliver a public talk entitled “Cinema, Animation and Serenity in Japan: Reflections from a Cultural Invitation Programme” at the Content Malaysia Pitching Centre this 28 July.

In April, he participated in The Japan Foundation Asia Center Short Term Invitation Programme for Cultural Leaders, which provides individuals – who are either prominent in various cultural and social fields or a leader of special importance in Asia – exposure to Japanese culture in a bid to enhance awareness and understanding of the country.

During his two-week stay, Hassan divided his time between animation and live-action. In addition to fellow academia, the 50-year veteran of the local film industry met Academy Award-nominated animator Koji Yamamura and legendary director Yoji Yamada of “Tora-san” fame.

Hassan also had the opportunity to trace Japan’s legacy on the silver screen via site visits, from the birth of anime at the Osamu Tezuka Museum to the shooting locations of enduring classics like Tokyo Story. In the midst of his busy schedule, he even squeezed in an appearance at the Malaysia Film Week.

The talk will end with a Q&A session with the audience.

About Hassan Muthalib : Hassan is a self-taught artist, animator, writer, film director and film historian who has been involved in the Malaysian film industry for almost 50 years. He was responsible for a slew of pioneering achievements in local animation, most notably the country’s first animated film “Silat Legenda” in 1998.

Hassan is officially recognised as the Father of Malaysian Animation and was also acknowledged by Nanyang Technological University as an Asian Animation Pioneer. His expertise has led to many speaking engagements abroad and his research papers on early Malaysian cinema have appeared in international publications.
